The Dangers of Being A Pedestrian

Being a pedestrian in the United States can be dangerous with a death rate of 1.58 people per 100,000 population.

Those most at risk are those over the age of 75 and as the American population ages there are projected to be more deaths.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau there were 18 million people over 75 in 2011 which was 6% of the population and by 2040 they project there will be 44 million over75s which is 12% of the population.

To prevent injury and death to pedestrians from motor vehicle accidents, pedestrians should ensure they are visible at night by wearing reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight. They should always walk on a sidewalk if there is one and if not they should walk on the shoulder or verge but always walk facing the oncoming traffic.

If pedestrians wish to cross the street, it should always be in a designated crosswalk or intersection.
